Methods of Measuring Overweight (excess fat) in the Body:

THERE ARE FOUR WAYS TO MEASURE (EXCESS FAT) IN THE BODY:

1. Weight Measurement: It is a gross measurement. Over weight may be for fat, may be for muscles. Over weight for development of muscles is not harmful for health. On the other excess fat turns out to be harmful. So, weight measurement without the development of muscles is bad for health. Under weight is bad anyway, whatever may be the cause fat reduction or muscle reduction.

A man or woman may have large body frame, medium body frame or small body frame. The lower limit is small body frame. And upper limit is for person having larger body frame.

2. BMI Measurement: The full form of BMI is Body Mass Index. Here weight is measured in terms of body height.

1 pound (lb.) = 0.453 kilogram

If, BMI is less than 25, BMI is standard
If, BMI is in between 25 and 29.5, BMI indicates overweight
If, BMI is more than 30, it is the case of obesity

3.Waist Circumferences: A recent study mentions that abdominal fat is worse of all and indicator of future health problems in the form of diabetes, cardiac problems etc.


Standard or ideal measure:-
Women waist circumferences is less than 31.5 inch
Men waist circumferences is less than 37 inch

Individual should be alert when:-
Women waist circumferences is in between 31.5 inch and 35 inch
Men waist circumferences in between 37 inch and 40 inch

Risky area and must take action when:-
Women waist circumferences is more than 35 inch
Men waist circumferences is more than 40 inch

4.Waist - hip ratio:-

Standard or ideal measurement ----
Circumference of waist / circumferences of hip < 0.8 (for women)
Circumference of waist / circumferences of hip < 1.00 (for men)

Action should be taken if---
Circumference of waist / circumferences of hip> 0.8 (for women)
Circumference of waist / circumferences of hip > 1.00 (for men)
