On the 29th of August 2005 Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf coast of the United States, It ripped through in the states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Many areas of New Orleans became flooded and winds of more than 100mph (160km/h) totally isolated the city.
At least 1,836 people lost their lives in the actual hurricane and in the subsequent floods, making it the deadliest U.S. h urricane since the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane. Hurricane Katrina was the largest natural disaster in the history of the United States. Preliminary damage estimates were $100 billion & over.
Major failure of few things as follows:
1. Total levee failure in all classes
2. Design and construction of the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)
2. Maintenance group by the local Levee Boards.
3. Emergency response problem & coordination from federal, state and local governments
4. The United States Coast Guard (USCG), National Hurricane Center (NHC) and National Weather Service (NWS) were widely commended for their actions, accurate forecasts and abundant lead time
It is common drama of upper classes abandoning those who are less fortunate. But the disparity in fortune wasn't only about social and financial differences, Racism played a large role in this tragedy. If we do not acknowledge the root problem, we can not prosper & progress. Using bandages we cannot cure or hide the wound, rather we need to go back to root & ask ourselves what causing the wound & define a constructive solution, not just opening a so called 'bandage making company' in every kilometer.
